Automatic Blind Opener

Automatic Blind Opener
This project was made for a CSC 235 class. This class focuses on the applications of code into physical objects. I had always been fascinated with the idea of automating homes, and I have seen have convenient they are. I took this project as an opportunity to automate my dorm room, by creating an automatic window blind opener. There have been times where I am up in my lofted bed, but don't feel like climbing down the ladder to open or close the window blinds. With this project, I don't have to get down. With the push of a button from a remote, I can open the window blinds to my desired amount, and I can do this without the inconvenience of leaving my position. This project is important because sometimes, windows could be placed at inconvenient locations that are hard for a lot of people, including people with disabilities to reach, and this would eliminate those problems. The experience of making this project taught me problem solving skills and planning hardware projects.
Steps Taken
When I began this project, the first thing I did was make a model for the extension that holds the blind and the motor. This took multiple attempts to get the measurement for each item. Then I figured out how to wire the motor and code the motor to move for a certain amount, then stop. The next step was understanding the Real Time Clock module, and figure out how to implement it into the project. Finally, I learned how to use the IR sensor and the remote and understand how to use each button as an input. After all of this was finished, I incorporated all these items into a box, and made appropriate cuts for items like the motor, IR sensor, and the batteries.
